On Halloween 2008 at 14:10:00 EDT Satoshi was sitting in front of his computer writing this email which started with:
I've been working on a new electronic cash system that's fully
peer-to-peer, with no trusted third party.
The paper is available at:
http://www.bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf
It was the first time Satoshi spoke, and the first time anyone heard of Bitcoin. I wrote more about this historical event here.
If you haven't read the Bitcoin whitepaper yet, today's a great day to give it a read.
It's ONLY 8 PAGES, and page 1 isn't technical at all. There are some super techy parts, but they're fun and interesting to re-read and understand.
In the 12 years since, Bitcoin has grown to be the 41st largest currency in the world. That's larger than the currency of many countries like: Finland, South Africa, Denmark, New Zealand...
It's an incredible achievement, and it's only just getting started.
Happy Halloween!
