John McAfee was a computer programmer and businessman who famously developed the first commercial anti-virus software, McAfee Anti-Virus, in 1987. McAfee resigned from the company in 1994 and was known for his lavish lifestyle, eccentric behavior, and legal issues which included drugs, firearms, tax evasion, and more. Despite this, McAfee successfully ran for US President twice during his lifetime, both in 2016 and 2020, on a Libertarian platform.
McAfee went on the run from US authorities in January 2019 with the SEC later alleging his involvement in cryptocurrency pump and dump schemes. He was eventually arrested in October 2020, in Spain. McAfee was found dead in his Spanish prison cell in June of 2021. Medical evidence determined McAfee’s death to be suicide by hanging. Despite this, numerous conspiracy theories continue to circulate – particularly due to a 2019 tweet from McAfee himself stating “If I suicide myself, I didn't. I was whackd.”
